When which choice?
Sport horse that works daily on hard ground: horseshoes often fit better. Leisure horse with strong horn and soft pasture: barefoot works fine. The horse with chronic hoof problems: consult your farrier and veterinarian.
Making the transition
Switching from horseshoes to barefoot often takes 3–6 months of gradual transition. Work less intensively on hard ground during this period. Hoof protectors (hoof boots) can help bridge the gap.
