1. Stable roughage schedule
No sudden feed changes. Switching hay suppliers? Do it gradually over 7–10 days.
2. Sufficient water — especially in winter
Horses drink less when water is cold. Lukewarm water in winter can increase intake by 50% and prevents impaction colic.
3. Exercise
At least 8 hours of movement per day. Long periods of standing in the stable slow down intestinal peristalsis.
4. Be cautious with concentrate feed
Many horses don't need concentrate feed at all. Too much starch can lead to fermentation and gas colic.
5. Strict deworming based on EPG testing
No blind deworming. EPG tests tell you whether your horse actually has a parasite burden. Over-deworming creates resistance.
6. Sand management
Does your horse eat from sandy ground? Give psyllium regularly or use mats under feed buckets.
7. Minimise stress
Transport, a new stable companion, competition day — small stressors add up. Make sure roughage is always available and routines remain stable.
