Chemical products
- Permethrin — strong, long-lasting
- DEET — effective against mosquitoes, shorter-acting
- Icaridin — milder than DEET
Natural alternatives
These work for a shorter time and need to be reapplied more frequently. Sometimes better tolerated by horses with sensitive skin.
- Citronella, eucalyptus, neem oil
- Garlic in feed (controversial)
- Apple cider vinegar (weak)
Non-cosmetic measures
- Sweet itch rug / fly rug
- Fly mask with ear covers
- Fan in the stable
- Remove manure daily (breeding ground for flies)
