Chemical products

  • Permethrin — strong, long-lasting
  • DEET — effective against mosquitoes, shorter-acting
  • Icaridin — milder than DEET

Natural alternatives

These work for a shorter time and need to be reapplied more frequently. Sometimes better tolerated by horses with sensitive skin.

  • Citronella, eucalyptus, neem oil
  • Garlic in feed (controversial)
  • Apple cider vinegar (weak)

Non-cosmetic measures

  • Sweet itch rug / fly rug
  • Fly mask with ear covers
  • Fan in the stable
  • Remove manure daily (breeding ground for flies)
