How Much Hay Does a Horse Need?
An average horse needs 1.5–2% of its body weight in roughage (hay/haylage) per day. For a 500kg horse, that equals 7.5–10kg of hay.
Concentrates — When Are They Necessary?
Concentrates are only needed for horses in intense work, during pregnancy, lactation, or with special energy requirements. Many horses receive unnecessary concentrates, which can lead to weight gain and metabolic issues.
Supplements
- Salt/minerals (available free choice)
- Magnesium for stress / muscle support
- Biotin for hoof problems
- Glucosamine for joint support
Fructan Index — Be Cautious With Grass
Fructan levels in grass are particularly high on spring mornings and during periods of cold nights followed by sunny days. This poses a risk for laminitis. EquiSight alerts you automatically.
